Serial studies of synovial fluid in evaluating intra-articular agents.

چکیده
One of the most difficult problems in the study of rheumatic diseases is the evaluation of an antiinflammatory response. That this is true in intraarticular as well as systemic therapy is illustrated by the divergence of results reported in the literature. For example, Cohen and others (1954) concluded, by purely clinical evaluation in a large number of patients, that cortisone acetate was equally as effective as hydrocortisone acetate, while studies based on more objective criteria by Duff and others (1951), Hollander and others (1951), Stevenson and others (1952), Ziff and others (1952), and Kersley and Desmarais (1952) clearly demonstrated its relative ineffectiveness. The present study poses two questions: (1) What are the changes in the synovial fluid examined by the usual techniques after the intraarticular administration of an agent of known effectiveness-hydrocortisone acetate? (2) Will serial analyses of synovial fluid permit evaluation in a limited number of patients of an agent ofunknown effectiveness-hydrocortisone ? The latter preparation differs from hydrocortisone acetate in its increased solubility in synovial fluid (Macek and others, 1952), and is, therefore, of considerable theoretical interest.

Intra-articular ketamine administration in equine midcarpal joint: clinical, biochemical and cytological evaluations
Providing suitable analgesia following diagnostic and therapeutic arthroscopic surgeries, that areconsidered to cause some degree of postoperative pain, is a necessity in equine practice. The aim of thepresent study was to evaluate the equine synovial fluid biochemical and cytological changes as well asclinical assessments of the joint following intra-articular administration of ketamine. Six a...
متن کاملGentamicin and tobramycin penetration into synovial fluid.
The penetration of gentamicin and tobramycin into the synovial fluid of 12 patients with nontraumatic joint effusions was studied. Simultaneous serum and synovial fluid specimens taken after the intramuscular or intravenous administration of an antimicrobial agent were assayed. Synovial fluid levels of antibiotic were >50% of serum levels in all subjects studied. In five patients, synovial flui...
متن کاملSynovial fluid inflammatory cytokines and proteins in clinically healthy and arthritic joint of dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius)
Analyzing the synovial fluid is one of the common methods to diagnose the articular problems to detect the stage and express the prognosis. Such gross, cytological, and biochemical analysis of synovial fluids can aid in the diagnosis of various joint diseases. Objectives: Normal values for synovial fluid in the camels have been described previously; however, there are no reports regarding conce...
متن کاملA method for estimating macromolecular reflection by human synovium, using measurements of intra-articular half lives.
Recent studies show that very large macromolecules in synovial fluid, such as hyaluronan and large proteoglycans, are partially reflected by the synovial lining during fluid drainage, and thus selectively retained within the cavity. Size selective molecular reflection is a fundamental property of membranes, and a method for quantifying the reflective behaviour of human synovium could be of valu...
متن کاملCanine adipose-derived stromal cell viability following exposure to synovial fluid from osteoarthritic joints
INTRODUCTION Stem cell therapy used in clinical application of osteoarthritis in veterinary medicine typically involves intra-articular injection of the cells, however the effect of an osteoarthritic environment on the fate of the cells has not been investigated. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Assess the viability of adipose derived stromal cells following exposure to osteoarthritic joint fluid. MATER...
